The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies will present a morning seminar on Saturday, June 12, from 9:00 to 1:00, on the theme of ‘Redeeming Communication,’ hosted by St. Mary Catholic Church in Nebraska City.
Mass will be offered at 8:00, followed by refreshments at 8:30, courtesy of The Keeping Room.
The seminar will commence at 9:00 and will feature three talks, one by each of the Emmaus teaching staff, that consider how the way we communicate with others should be shaped by the way that God has shared himself with the world in his Word.
Vern Steiner will survey the biblical voice of Wisdom, especially Proverbs and Sirach, to bring to light some of the Bible’s insights on how God’s people are intended to speak to one another and to the world in which we live; in a manner that brings healing rather than destruction.
Joshua Burks will lead us through a careful reading of James 3 to consider the costly weight of words, and explain how sins such as lying, gossip, and slander lie at the root of many of our modern problems.
Chad Steiner will conclude by exploring practical ways both to develop skills necessary for fruitful communication, as well as the virtues necessary to practice such skills wisely, so that our communication is “gracious and seasoned with salt” (Col 4:6) rather than ungracious and salty.
Q&A will follow the talks at 12:00, and a light lunch will be catered, also by The Keeping Room.
